Geography of India: Location, Size, and Borders
India occupies most of the Indian subcontinent in South Asia. It stretches from the high Himalaya in the north to a tropical coast in the south, and from the Thar Desert in the west to the hills of the northeast. That span is why one country can have glaciers, monsoon forests, and coral islands at the same time.
This guide covers India’s position on the globe, its size, its land neighbors, and its place in the Indian Ocean. Later posts in this series look at physical features, rivers, climate and the monsoon, and vegetation and soils.
Where India sits on the map#
The mainland runs from about 8°N to 37°N latitude and from about 68°E to 97°E longitude. The Tropic of Cancer, at 23½°N, crosses the middle of the country. Land north of that line has a subtropical to temperate feel in winter. Land south of it is firmly tropical.
Including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the southernmost point is Indira Point, near 6°45′N. Those islands sit closer to Southeast Asia than to Delhi. The northern edge reaches the high Karakoram and the Tibetan frontier.
Two numbers help a traveler or a student picture the distance:
- North to south, the mainland is about 3,200 kilometers (2,000 miles).
- East to west, it is about 2,900 kilometers (1,800 miles).
Local solar time differs by about two hours between Gujarat in the west and Arunachal Pradesh in the east. India uses one clock anyway. Indian Standard Time is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of UTC, based on the 82°30′E meridian near Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh. When it is noon in New York in summer (Eastern Daylight Time), it is 9:30 p.m. in India.
How large India is#
India’s land area is about 3.29 million square kilometers (1.27 million square miles). That makes it the seventh-largest country by area, after Russia, Canada, China, the United States, Brazil, and Australia.
A useful comparison for readers in the United States: India is roughly one-third the size of the US, and a little larger than Alaska, Texas, and California combined. Packed into that space is the world’s largest population, more than 1.4 billion people. India’s census, last completed in 2011, has been delayed, so treat any very precise headcount as an estimate.
The country is a union of 28 states and 8 union territories. States such as Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are huge. Goa and Sikkim are small. The union territories are Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Chandigarh, Puducherry, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Land borders#
India’s land frontier is about 15,100 kilometers (9,400 miles). Seven countries appear on Indian official border lists. Lengths below are the rounded figures long used by Indian survey sources. Mountain borders are hard to measure, and some stretches are disputed.
| Neighbor | Approx. land border | What the border is like |
|---|---|---|
| Bangladesh | 4,097 km (2,546 mi) | Longest border; rivers, plains, and many enclaves that were simplified by a 2015 land swap |
| China | 3,488 km (2,167 mi) | High Himalaya and the Karakoram; several sections are disputed |
| Pakistan | 3,323 km (2,065 mi) | Desert, Punjab plains, and the disputed Kashmir region |
| Nepal | 1,751 km (1,088 mi) | Open Himalayan foothill border |
| Myanmar | 1,643 km (1,021 mi) | Forested hills of the northeast |
| Bhutan | 699 km (434 mi) | Eastern Himalaya |
| Afghanistan | 106 km (66 mi) | A short claimed line along the Wakhan Corridor |
Bangladesh wraps around much of India’s east. The border is the longest India shares with any country. A 2015 agreement exchanged dozens of former enclaves so people were no longer living in pockets of one country inside the other.
The China frontier follows the Himalaya. India and China disagree on Aksai Chin in the west and on Arunachal Pradesh in the east, which China claims as part of Tibet. Those disputes shape patrols and road building, but they do not change the basic geography: a wall of high mountains between the Indian plains and the Tibetan plateau.
Pakistan’s border runs from the Arabian Sea through the Rann of Kutch and the Thar Desert, then through Punjab, and into the mountains of Jammu and Kashmir. Both countries claim the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. The line of control is a military line, not a settled international boundary.
The short Afghanistan figure needs a caveat. Indian maps show a land border of about 106 kilometers where the Wakhan Corridor meets territory India claims in Kashmir. That land is administered by Pakistan. Many world maps therefore do not show India and Afghanistan as touching.
Nepal and Bhutan sit in the Himalayan belt. Myanmar meets the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram.
Sea borders and the Indian Ocean#
For decades textbooks used a coastline of 7,516.6 kilometers (4,671 miles). In April 2025 the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways adopted a new official length of 11,098.81 kilometers (6,896 miles). The shore did not grow. Surveyors traced the high-water line at a finer scale, so creeks, inlets, and island shores that older small-scale maps smoothed over are now counted. Gujarat has the longest state coastline under that survey. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands add about 3,084 kilometers on their own.
The west coast faces the Arabian Sea. The east coast faces the Bay of Bengal. The two seas meet south of Kanyakumari in the Indian Ocean. That position puts India on the sea lane between the Suez Canal and East Asia. Most of the oil and container traffic between the Persian Gulf and China, Japan, and South Korea passes through the Indian Ocean.
Two island countries are maritime neighbors:
- Sri Lanka lies across the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar. At the closest, the gap is only a few dozen kilometers. A chain of limestone shoals, called Adam’s Bridge or Ram Setu, almost links the two shores.
- The Maldives is a chain of coral atolls southwest of India in the Arabian Sea.
India’s own islands matter as much as the mainland coast. Lakshadweep is a group of coral islands off Kerala. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands run south from Myanmar toward Sumatra and guard the eastern approach to the Bay of Bengal.
Why location shapes daily life#
Latitude decides the sun. Southern India has little temperature swing between seasons. The far north has cold winters and a short growing season in the high valleys. The Tropic of Cancer is a clean dividing line on a climate map, even though mountains and the monsoon rewrite the pattern on the ground.
Longitude decides the clock and the monsoon’s arrival. The southwest monsoon typically strikes the Kerala coast in early June and takes weeks to reach the northwest. A storm that is “today’s weather” in Mumbai may still be days away from Delhi.
Borders decide trade and tension. The open Nepal border moves workers and goods with little formality. The Bangladesh border is busy with formal trade and with river water that both countries need. The Pakistan and China borders are among the most militarized high ground in the world.
Physical barriers inside the country matter as much as international lines. The Himalaya blocks cold Central Asian air and feeds the great rivers. The Thar Desert limits easy movement in the west. The Western Ghats wall off the Deccan from Arabian Sea rain. Those barriers are the subject of the physical features post.
A simple way to read the map#
Start with four anchors:
- Karakoram and Himalaya across the north.
- Indo-Gangetic plain as a wide belt south of those mountains.
- Peninsular plateau as the old triangular block pointing at Sri Lanka.
- Two coasts and two island groups wrapping the south.
If you can place the neighbors around that frame—Pakistan west, China and Nepal north, Bhutan and Bangladesh east, Myanmar farther east, Sri Lanka south—you can follow news about floods, borders, and shipping without getting lost.
For a class packet, export a blank outline map and a labeled map as separate pages, then combine them with Merge PDF. If the file is too heavy to email, run it through Compress PDF.
FAQ#
Is India in Asia or its own continent?#
India is in Asia. “Subcontinent” means a large, distinct piece of a continent. The Indian plate crashed into Asia and lifted the Himalaya, so geologists treat the landmass as a unit even though it is not a separate continent.
How many countries border India?#
Indian official lists name seven land neighbors: Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. Sri Lanka and the Maldives are sea neighbors. The Afghanistan contact is short and lies in disputed Kashmir.
What time zone does India use?#
The whole country uses Indian Standard Time, UTC+5:30. India does not observe daylight saving time.
Which states does the Tropic of Cancer cross?#
From west to east: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura, and Mizoram.
Where to go next#
Location is the frame. The land inside that frame is what people farm, sail, and live on. Continue with the mountains, plains, plateau, desert, coasts, and islands, then the rivers that tie those regions together.
