The house on mango street by Sandra Cisneros novel begins with Esperanza a 12-year-old Mexican-American girl and her family moving into a house on mango street. the house is located in Chicago in a small Latino neighborhood. The house is not what they hoped for but it is a step up from where they’ve lived previously.
They’ve lived in many apartments in this house is the first house that their parents had purchased. The house on mango street we didn’t always live on mango street before that we lived on Lumis on the third floor before that we lived on Keeler before Keeler it was Paulina and before that, I can’t remember but what I remember most is moving a lot each time.
It seemed there’d be one more of us by the time we got to mango street. there were six mama, papa, Carlos, Kiki, my sister Nene and me.
The house on mango street is ours and we don’t have to pay rent suit anybody or have to share. the yard with the people downstairs or be careful not to make too much noise and there isn’t a landlord banging on the ceiling with a broom but even so.
it’s not the house we thought we’d get we had to leave the flat on Loomis quick. the water pipes broke and the learned Lord wouldn’t fix them because the house was too old.
we had to leave fast we were using the washroom next door and carrying water over empty milk gallons that are why mama and papa looked for a house and that’s why we moved into the house on mango street far away from the other side of town. this is when they first moved to the house on mango street.
when they first moved there Esperanza made Lucy and Rachel who lived across the street they were all about the same age as Esperanza Lucy Rachel, so they even included her sister Nene. when they would go on adventures in the neighborhood.
The first part of the book is all about them playing having childish games. they would play in the neighborhood they play in the park, they go to the thrift store, they even bought a bike and they would ride around on the bike in the summer.
Esperanza grew into her puberty stage. this is when she began to like boys she would dream about them all the time. however, she was very inexperienced.
Esperanza was growing up and she meets another young lady named Sally. sally was much more mature than Esperanza, so she taught Esperanza how to talk to boys. it was very interesting when watching Esperanza grow up and when she meets Sally.
I truly recommend you read the house on mango street by Sandra Cisneros. the book is relatable it stands the test of time and these are experiences that we’ve all had growing up.
